Cross-border travel from Armenia

Armenia shares open land borders with Georgia and Iran. The one with Turkey has been closed since 1993 and the one with Azerbaijan since 1991 — don't attempt either. The Georgia crossing is the most used: four border posts connect the two countries, with Bagratashen-Sadakhlo on the main highway being the smoothest for vehicles. A daily marshrutka runs Yerevan to Tbilisi in 5-6 hours; the overnight train is slower (around 10 hours) but comfortable and a genuinely pleasant experience. The combined Armenia-Georgia trip is one of the most complete itineraries in the Caucasus — enough cultural and landscape contrast between the two countries to fill two weeks without overlap or fatigue. The Iran crossing at Meghri-Norduz in southern Syunik is open and functional but used almost exclusively by truckers and overlanders who have planned ahead for Iranian visas; it's outside the scope of most itineraries on this site but covered in the relevant transport guide for those who need it.
