Heritage travel and the diaspora experience

Around 10 million Armenians live outside Armenia — in Russia, France, the United States, Lebanon, Argentina, and communities across the Middle East built from the survivors of the 1915 Genocide. For many visitors, a trip to Armenia is a homecoming shaped by family stories passed down across two or three generations. The Tsitsernakaberd Genocide Memorial in Yerevan is the starting point for most heritage itineraries: the flame burns year-round in the circular memorial hall, and the adjacent museum documents the deportations and massacres with archival photographs and survivor testimony. Finding ancestral villages requires research — the Genealogy foundation in Yerevan and Repat Armenia, the repatriation NGO, both maintain records that can point diaspora visitors toward the right province or sometimes the right house. For Western Armenians whose families came from eastern Anatolia, those villages are now in Turkey; for eastern Armenians, the ancestral connection is often in the Lori, Shirak, or Aragatsotn regions.
