Getting around Armenia without a car

Armenia is navigable without renting a car, but it requires accepting marshrutka logic. These minibuses run fixed routes between cities and towns on no published schedule — they leave when the driver decides they're full enough, which at Yerevan's Kilikia bus station typically means waiting 20-40 minutes beyond the nominal departure time. Routes connect all major towns: Yerevan to Gyumri (2h, frequent), Yerevan to Vanadzor (1h30), Yerevan to Goris (3h30, change needed for Tatev). Within Yerevan, GG Taxi is the local ride-hailing equivalent — cheaper and more reliable than flagging taxis on the street, and drivers have no expectation of negotiating the fare. The train network is limited but atmospheric: the Yerevan-Gyumri-Tbilisi service runs daily and is the most comfortable way to reach northern Armenia or continue into Georgia. Renting a car (available in Yerevan, international licence required) opens up everything in between — unpaved roads to Aragats, the Jermuk valley, remote Lori monasteries — but isn't necessary for the main circuit.
