Yerevan Zvartnots airport transfer guide

Yerevan Zvartnots airport transfer guide

What to expect when you land at Zvartnots

Zvartnots International Airport (IATA: EVN) sits 12 km west of Yerevan’s Republic Square — a 20-to-30-minute drive in normal traffic, up to 45 minutes during Friday-evening rush hour. The terminal is compact and relatively easy to navigate, but the taxi-driver scene immediately outside arrivals is the first test for every new visitor to Armenia.

The good news: getting into town cheaply is straightforward once you know your options. The bad news: if you walk straight out and accept the first offer, you will overpay.

This guide covers every realistic option in order of price — from the cheapest (GG Taxi app) to the most convenient (pre-booked private transfer through GetYourGuide).

Option 1: GG Taxi app (cheapest, ~4,000–5,000 AMD)

GG Taxi is Armenia’s answer to Uber. There is no Uber in Armenia. GG Taxi is the dominant ride-hailing app, used daily by locals and expats in Yerevan. The interface works in English well enough to get by.

How to use it:

  1. Download the app (iOS or Android) before you board your flight — it is free and available internationally.
  2. At Zvartnots, connect to the free airport Wi-Fi or use a roaming data plan.
  3. Set your pickup to the airport and your destination to your hotel.
  4. The app shows an upfront price before you confirm — typically 4,000–5,000 AMD (around 10–12 EUR at April 2026 rates of ~410 AMD per EUR) to central Yerevan.
  5. A driver arrives within 5–10 minutes; payment is in-app by card or cash on arrival.

The main advantage over street taxis is price transparency and accountability — you see the driver’s name, car plate, and rating before you get in. There are no surprises.

Potential issues: If you have no local SIM or roaming data, you need to use the airport Wi-Fi in arrivals (look for “ZIA_Free_WiFi”). Signal can be slow during peak hours. This is why having an eSIM organised before you travel is worthwhile — see the Armenia eSIM and mobile data guide for options that activate before you land.

Option 2: Official taxi from the rank (4,000–6,000 AMD with negotiation)

Inside the arrivals hall there is an official taxi desk. Prices are nominally fixed but in practice you should still confirm before you go. Outside the terminal you will encounter independent drivers — these are the ones most likely to quote 8,000–12,000 AMD to visitors who look uncertain.

Rules for using any street taxi at Zvartnots:

  • Always agree the fare verbally before you get in. Say the destination clearly and ask “how much?” (Inch arje? in Armenian).
  • Do not accept “meter” promises — most Yerevan taxis do not use meters and those that claim to rarely have them calibrated.
  • Paying in AMD is normal; drivers have change.
  • 4,000–5,000 AMD is a fair price to anywhere in the central Yerevan area; 6,000 AMD is acceptable for Kentron or Shengavit neighbourhoods.

If you are arriving late at night (EVN has some flights landing after midnight), GG Taxi is still active and often more reliable than finding a legitimate taxi at the rank.

Option 3: Pre-booked private transfer (most stress-free, 25–50 EUR)

For travellers who want someone holding a sign at arrivals, a pre-booked private transfer through GetYourGuide removes all guesswork. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall, helps with luggage, and drives you to your hotel in a private vehicle.

Book an airport-to-hotel transfer from Zvartnots

This option costs significantly more than GG Taxi — roughly 25–50 EUR depending on vehicle size and whether you book return. It is worth considering if:

  • You are arriving very late at night with heavy luggage
  • You are travelling with children or elderly family members
  • You are part of a group of four or more (the per-person cost approaches GG Taxi)
  • You want to pre-pay in EUR rather than deal with AMD on arrival

Private one-way Yerevan airport transfer

For one-way transfers, GYG also offers a layover tour option that combines an Etchmiadzin visit with airport drop-off — useful if you have a long connection.

Option 4: Hotel shuttle (7,000–15,000 AMD)

Most mid-range and upmarket hotels in Yerevan offer airport pickup. Rates typically range from 7,000 to 15,000 AMD one-way, with luxury properties charging higher. Contact your hotel in advance to arrange this.

Hotel shuttles are reliable and convenient but cost more than GG Taxi. The advantage is that the driver knows your hotel and often speaks some English.

Budget guesthouses and hostels do not usually offer shuttles — GG Taxi is your friend here.

Option 5: Public bus (cheapest option for the adventurous)

Bus 201 runs between Zvartnots and Yerevan’s Gai bus terminal (near the Kilikia long-distance station). The fare is 100 AMD. From Gai you can catch a marshrutka or metro to your accommodation.

This option is not practical if you have checked luggage, are arriving after 22:00, or are unfamiliar with the city. It is mentioned for completeness — the getting around Armenia by marshrutka guide explains the broader public transport picture.

Airport logistics: what to know before you go

Arrivals hall

The single arrivals hall is straightforward. Baggage claim is immediately past passport control. There is a currency exchange bureau in arrivals (acceptable rates, but Ameriabank ATMs just inside give better rates), a small café, and a SIM card kiosk operated by VivaCell-MTS.

Currency

Have at least 5,000–10,000 AMD in cash before leaving the terminal, either from the ATM inside or from exchanging a small amount of EUR or USD. ATMs in arrivals accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard). The exchange bureau rate is typically 1–2% worse than ATMs.

SIM cards

VivaCell-MTS, Ucom, and Beeline all have presence at or near the airport. A local SIM with 5–10 GB of data costs 2,000–5,000 AMD and requires your passport. This is often the easiest solution for a multi-day trip — but if you have only a short stay or want a no-fuss solution, an eSIM activated before landing is more practical. See the Armenia eSIM guide.

Departures

Allow at least 2 hours before your flight. Security queues can be long during peak summer months. GG Taxi for the return journey works the same as on arrival — book the ride 15–20 minutes before you need to leave your hotel.

Getting into Yerevan from the airport: area guide

Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) is 12 km west of Yerevan’s Republic Square, on the road toward Etchmiadzin. Once you are in a vehicle — whether GG Taxi, pre-booked transfer, or hotel shuttle — the drive into the city follows the Tigranashen–Yerevan highway.

Key landmarks en route:

  • You pass the Zvartnots Cathedral ruins on the left (5 km from the airport) — the 7th-century ruins are visible from the road, an atmospheric introduction to Armenian heritage.
  • The approach to Yerevan runs through the industrial western suburbs before the city opens up.
  • Most hotels in the Kentron (centre) district are 20–30 minutes from the airport in normal traffic.

Crossing to Tbilisi after landing

If you are connecting from Yerevan to Tbilisi by road the same day, a direct private transfer is your only realistic option for door-to-door comfort. The Yerevan to Tbilisi overland guide covers the train, marshrutka, and shared taxi options in detail.

First 24 hours in Yerevan: what to do after landing

Once you have cleared customs and reached your hotel, Yerevan is an easy city to orient yourself in. The centre is walkable; GG Taxi handles any distance over 15 minutes. A few practical steps for your first day:

  1. Get Armenian dram (AMD). Ameriabank and ACBA ATMs in the arrivals hall are reliable; your hotel front desk can direct you to the nearest ATM or exchange bureau. The rate at airport ATMs is close to the city-centre rate.
  2. Download GG Taxi if you have not already (free Wi-Fi in the airport helps).
  3. Get a local SIM or eSIM activated. The VivaCell kiosk in arrivals is open for most flight arrivals. For eSIM, see the Armenia eSIM guide.
  4. Walk Republic Square in the evening. The fountains and the surrounding Soviet-era ministries are spectacular after dark, with the illuminated colours drawing locals and visitors alike.
  5. Plan your first day trip. Garni and Geghard (the pagan temple and rock-cut monastery in the Kotayk region, 28–37 km from Yerevan) are the classic first-day excursion from the capital — see the Garni and Geghard day trip guide.

Frequently asked questions about Yerevan airport transfers

Is there Uber in Armenia?

No. Uber does not operate in Armenia. The local equivalent is GG Taxi, available on iOS and Android. Yandex Go also operates in Yerevan and works similarly. Both apps show upfront prices and driver details.

How long does the drive from Zvartnots to central Yerevan take?

Between 20 and 35 minutes in normal conditions. During peak evening traffic (17:00–19:00 on weekdays) it can stretch to 45–50 minutes. Late-night arrivals are usually 20–25 minutes.

Can I pay by card in Yerevan taxis?

Cash (AMD) is the norm for all taxis and marshrutkas. GG Taxi and Yandex Go allow in-app card payment. Street taxis almost never accept cards. Bring AMD.

Is it safe to take a taxi from the airport at night?

Yes. Yerevan is generally a safe city. The main risk at the airport is overpaying, not personal safety. Using GG Taxi at night eliminates both concerns.

What if my flight is delayed? Will my pre-booked transfer wait?

GYG private transfer providers typically monitor flight arrivals and adjust pickup time accordingly. Confirm this policy when booking, as different operators have slightly different grace-period policies (usually 45–60 minutes free waiting).

Where do I find GG Taxi at Zvartnots airport?

Open the app and set your pickup location to the airport. The driver will show their expected arrival point on the map — usually the departures/arrivals drop-off zone. Step outside arrivals, confirm via the app chat, and wait.

Can I walk to the nearest marshrutka stop?

The nearest marshrutka stop is at the airport bus layby. Bus 201 to Gai bus terminal runs roughly every 15–20 minutes during the day. It is not sign-posted clearly for international arrivals — ask at the airport information desk if unsure. There are no direct marshrutkas to the city centre from the terminal.
